Inspection & Preventive Maintenance Program

The Virginia Crane Inspection and Preventive Maintenance Program is designed to protect your employees from unseen hazards and keep your equipment in optimum running condition. Thorough inspections reduce downtime, add life to your equipment, and ultimately save you money in repair and maintenance costs.

Highly Qualified Inspectors

Our crane inspectors have training and experience that exceeds the qualification requirements of CMAA spec 78 (Standards and Guidelines for Professional Services Performed on Overhead and Traveling Cranes and Associated Hoisting Equipment).

  • The average experience of our inspectors and technicians exceeds 10 years.

  • Qualification and training records of technicians working on your inspection are readily available for review upon request.

Periodic Inspection Checklists

During our periodic evaluations, all applicable code violations will be noted. We break our comprehensive inspections down into four primary categories to ensure every component of your crane operates safely and efficiently.

Mechanical Inspections

  • Bridge and Trolley Drive: Wheel flanges, tread wear, bearings, couplings, pillow blocks, shafts, and gear cases. Braking systems are checked for wheel wear, proper adjustment, lining wear, and hydraulic integrity.
  • Hoist Drive: Hoist drums, bearings, sheaves, and wire ropes are checked for wear, damage, and lubrication. Gear cases are checked for gear wear, load brake or clutch adjustments, and coupling damage.

Structural Inspections

  • Bridge: End trucks, girder connections, bridge camber, trolley rail alignment, and runway structure rail elevations. We also inspect handrails, footwalks, access ladders, and main line support toe arms for damage and fatigue.
  • Trolley Frame: The trolley frame is checked thoroughly using the same structural format as the bridge.

Electrical Inspections

Standard Compliance: All electrical components are inspected in strict conjunction with the National Electrical Codes (N.E.C.).

  • Enclosures & Wiring: NEMA enclosures, conduit installation, wire sizing, insulation condition, and terminal connections.
  • Controls & Motors: Reversing timers, speed relays, limit switches, and master switch control stations. We check motors for stator and winding wear, and verify mainline and cross conductor systems.
  • Protection Systems: Fusing and motor overload protection are checked for proper sizing and potential damage.

Operational Inspections

  • Bridge & Trolley: Drive mechanisms are checked for tracking, skewing, and binding on rails. Controls are tested for proper speed sequences and safe braking stopping distances.
  • Hoist: Mechanical, eddy current, and controlled braking functions are tested alongside holding brake adjustments. We verify limit switch actuation, hoist wire rope seating, and the free movement of sheaves.
